Lincoln's First Major Public Art Project

bottle cap bikeTour de Lincoln was the first major public art project of the Lincoln Arts Council. A committee of community volunteers organized the project, which involved the creation of bicycle sculptures to celebrate the city's nationally recognized trail system.

Artists submitted more than 200 models, a jury narrowed that to about 150, and 71 were sponsored. The bike sculptures graced Lincoln streets, sidewalks, parks, and gathering places in the summer of 2003. In October, the bike auction at Haymarket Park raised more than $430,000.
