Call for submissions - Bittersweet: Finding Hope in the Midst of Despair

Images and stories exploring social irony are even more important in trying times.  These works can encourage people to exercise and develop their imagination, their sense of interconnectedness, and most importantly, their understanding of friends and neighbors that are struggling to get by. To enhance the public discourse with visual and literary commentary on social processes and mechanisms, we may begin to address local inadequacies that many Nebraskans face in realizing the American dream.

We are planning an exhibition that will celebrate the exceptional work of talented professional, amateur, and student artists, writers, photographers, poets, and songwriters from Nebraska on this subject.

Entries: We welcome photographs (actual or staged), works of art in any medium, poems, fiction or memoir (word limit: 1500 words). Send up to 10 works (total number of paintings, drawings, photographs, short stories, poems, and lyrics together) for consideration. No entry form is required, but please enclose a note that includes your name, address, email, titles/captions, website, and any other information pertinent to your submittal. For photographs or artwork, please send your images in digital format (at least 300 dpi) and a description of the setting or inspiration.

Please make your submissions to bittersweetnebraska@gmail.com. All entries must be received by July 1, 2011.

The Creative Commons license Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 will apply to all work submitted. Selected works can be published in any upcoming exhibitions or publications, with full attribution to the artists. All works may be kept on file for possible future use.

Bittersweet Nebraska is an emerging, independent initiative of Jessyca Vandercoy and Jennifer Lentfer that relies on the support and contributions of the community. For more information or to offer your web design or fundraising skills, email bittersweetnebraska@gmail.com. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for your support!

Special Thanks

In 2009 the Lincoln Arts Council received a generous gift from the estate of Ken Good, a portion of which was used to redevelop our website and establish an endowment. We offer our heart-felt thanks to Kenneth J. Good for his generosity and vision for a beautiful future.
